Mom Fun 101: Local Activities to Celebrate Mother’s Day

There’s one thing for certain, all moms are different. And, they all like to do different things. This Mother’s Day spend some quality time with mom doing those things she loves best. We know some of moms' favorite things are eating breakfast out, wine, flowers, music, chocolate, and some much needed time out. Create some lasting memories and satisfy mom’s craving for some of her favorite things to do this Mother’s Day with a few of these local favorite activities. Guaranteed to put a smile on her face.

For the breakfast lover. For an unexpected twist this Mother’s Day ditch taking her out to a restaurant for breakfast. Instead, make it extra special by packing a picnic for breakfast. Bakery muffins, yogurt cups, fresh fruit, homemade orange juice, and freshly brewed coffee from a local coffeehouse isn’t much fuss but works well outdoors. Or, for the culinary inclined make your own muffins. Choose her favorite park or picnic spot and enjoy.

For the explorer. Make mom’s day extraordinary and take a road trip to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area in the Texas Hill Country. Magical and mystical, Enchanted Rock is a true gem. Mom will think so, too. This massive pink granite rock formation towers over the hill country. The hike to the top doesn’t disappoint. It delivers spectacular views. Stay the day. There’s 11 miles of hiking trails. If you don’t get out in time for breakfast, no worries, pack a lunch. There is a $7 daily entrance fee per person; children 12 and under are free.

For the wine lover. Go for a morning stroll in a vineyard. And, indulge mom with a mimosa during Flat Creek Winery’s Mimosa Vineyard Walk. It takes place on Saturday, May 11, 10 a.m. in Marble Falls. Take a tour of the grounds while listening to chirping birds and looking for rabbits. And, learn what it takes to make wine. Admission is $10 and includes a Lavender Fields Mimosa. YUM! Children are free. Reservations are required. The hill country is home to over 50 wineries with special Mother’s Day events happening all weekend. Yoga, lunch, brunch, and much, much, more.

For the garden lover. Sweet-smelling flowers are everywhere at the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center. It’s a great place to learn, play, and bring the kids. A free guided tour with the price of admission is available on Mother’s Day from 10-11 a.m. Knowledgeable guides discuss native plants, flowers, and the center’s history. If you’re lucky the center’s resident great horned owl, Athena, will make an appearance. Adult admission is $12, kids ages 5-17 is $6 and children 4 years and under are free.

For the music lover. The Austin Symphonic Band pays special tribute to all moms with a free public concert on Sunday, May 12 from 7-8 p.m. March on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol to familiar works by two of the most beloved American military composers and conductors John Philip Sousa and Frank Ticheli. Bring a blanket, some munchies, and enjoy the beautiful landscape of our state’s capitol.

For the chocolate lover. Give mom a taste of the sweet life at Delysia Chocolatier’s free Mother’s Day event. This Austin area business is treating moms on Sunday, May 12 from noon to 5 p.m. with chocolate tastings, a complimentary mimosa bar, and a free molded chocolate rose. Award-winning, they handcraft all their products with care and use fresh quality ingredients. The event is open to the public. Families welcome.
